A long-time rivalry since the first season both clubs were together in Major League Soccer, the Chicago Fire and D.C. United meet for a second time this year when they face off on Wednesday evening at Toyota Park. The teams met in the Fire’s inaugural season in MLS Cup ’98, and earlier this year United claimed a 3-1 win at RFK Stadium.
The Fire are looking to put an end to a three-game losing skid, extended in a 2-0 home defeat by New England last time out, while United snapped a two-game losing slide with a 2-1 come-from-behind home win against the Revolution on Sunday. The Fire suffered their third consecutive defeat in league play last time out, a 2-0 defeat by the New England Revolution on June 13 at Gillette Stadium. The Fire did win their fourth-round U.S. Open Cup match in the interim, defeating the USL’s Louisville City 1-0 in extra time. United put an end to their two-game league losing skid, getting two late goals for a 2-1 come-from-behind win against the New England Revolution on Sunday afternoon at RFK Stadium. The teams are meeting for the second time this season. Jairo Arrieta scored a pair of goals and Conor Doyle added a third in a second-half burst as United exploded for a 3-1 win June 3 at RFK Stadium. The first meeting was a second consecutive win for United in the series, after going six matchups without a victory.
