TEAM NEWS
Paderborn relieved coach Markus Gellhaus of his duties during the international break, a decision taken after a 1-0 defeat at Duisburg on Matchday 10.
Former Bayern Munich player Stefan Effenberg has now been handed the reins – his first ever appointment as head coach.
Effenberg will be without Oliver Kirch and Christian Bickel this weekend. Kirch has torn a muscle while Bickel has sustained ligament damage.
Srdjan Lakic is still suspended, although Thomas Bertels is fit again.
Braunschweig’s personnel issues are such that coach Torsten Lieberknecht brought U-23 coach Deniz Dogan onto the bench for Matchday 10’s victory over Union Berlin. He is likely to remain in service for the trip to Paderborn, with Saulo Decarli suspended and Marcel Correia doubtful.
Mirko Boland, scorer of both goals in the 2-1 win over Union, has torn a ligament while Emil Berggreen remains out with a shoulder problem. The pair have accounted for seven of the Lions’ 19 goals this season.
Paderborn:
Suspended: Lakic (two matches)
Doubtful: None
Injured/unavailable: Kirch (muscle), Bickel (ligament)
Braunschweig:
Suspended: Decarli (one match)
Doubtful: Berggreen (shoulder), Correia (muscle tear)
Injured/Unavailable: Boland (torn ligament)
MATCH PREVIEW
Paderborn put in a woeful display at basement boys Duisburg on Matchday 10, losing 1-0 and coach Markus Gellhaus paying with his job. The club have taken the bold step of appointing coaching novice Stefan Effenberg in his stead.
His first task will be to improve a ropey home record (W1 D1 L3) when Braunschweig come calling.
Paderborn, a place above the relegation zone, have found the net three times at the Benteler Arena this season and only five times in total. With six losses in the last eight games, general form has been little better.
Braunschweig’s recent upswing continued on Matchday 10 with a battling 2-1 win at home to Union Berlin, the Lions’ fifth victory in seven games.
Torsten Lieberknecht’s side were resilient, with Mirko Boland taking both goals impressively. The midfielder, who has already found the net three times this season, will be a big miss.
Braunschweig do, however, boast an impressive away record (W3 D1) and are yet to concede on the road. Nevertheless, given the visitors’ injury problems and the hosts being out to impress a new boss, I expect a draw in this one. draw in this one.
