Washington vs. Jets 2015 picks and predictions: New York expected to roll

Fesh off a bye week following their win over the Miami Dolphins two weeks ago in London, the New York Jets return home to face a Washington team that is looking to rebound from a heartbreaking overtime loss last Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

Washington has shown promise this season with victories over the Rams and Eagles, and is probably only a few pieces away from being a real contender. The problem right now is that the team hasn't been able to put together good efforts on a consistent basis, alternating wins and losses in its first five games. The only silver lining is that if this trend continues, Washington is in line to beat the Jets on Sunday.

Even with a 2-3 record, Washington can't be counted out of a wide-open NFC East race, where the four teams are each within a game of first place and no one is threatening to run away with the division. One concern for Washington going forward is a rushing attack that has sputtered in the past few weeks. After averaging 172 yards per game and 4.6 yards per rush in their first two games, Washington's backs have run for just 89 yards per game at a clip of 3.5 yards per rush in its last three contests.

The Jets couldn't have asked for a better situation at the quarter pole of the season, with a 3-1 record (including 1-0 in the AFC East) and looking like a playoff contender. They also have a favorable schedule coming up: a four-game stretch starting Sunday that includes games against Washington, the Jaguars (Week 8) and Raiders (Week 9) sandwiched around a key divisional showdown with the Patriots in Week 7.

New York seems to have found its formula for success this season, dominating in the trenches with a run-first offense and an aggressive, opportunistic defense. It is allowing the fewest points and second-fewest yards per game in the league, and despite playing only four games, is tied for second with 13 takeaways. On offense, their rushing game ranks seventh in yardage and only three teams are averaging more carries per game than the Jets.
