The Austrian Bundesliga starts today.
As we know by now, the teams with the most money to spend usually come out on top.
In Austria, that means Red Bull Salzburg followed by Rapid Vienna is the most likely order. Nevertheless, their is Europa league football open for teams placed 3-5th, so their is plenty to play for. In fact, by finishing third in last years league, the visitors have made it to the qualification stages of this seasons Europa league, and they will play Portuguese side Guimaraes next thursday in that competition. Grodig ended last season in eighth place (3rd bottom) with 37 points. That meant they avoided relegation by 8 points, but finished 22 behind todays rival Altach.
During the past season the pair played each other four times, with Altach winning three, and the other ending in a 3-3 draw.
Grodig could be in for a very tough start to the new campaign. Afterall, they were recently knocked out of the Austrian cup by regional outfit Union Gurten.
And, they have had a last minute change in managers, Michael Baur has left the club to be replaced by Peter Schottel.
Other than that, a few players have left and a couple of replacements have arrived. For the first match of the new campaign, summer signing Dominik Baumgartner is out, and Roman Wallner is described has very doubtful.
The biggest issue for the hosts could be scoring enough goals, since some of their better strikers left. We can only assume new signings Benjamin Sulimani and Bernd Gschweidl will fight it out for one of the attacking roles, but neither have ever been that prolific.
Altach exceeded many peoples expectations last season by finishing an highly respectable third.
And, the good news is that coach Damir Canadi has agreed to continue, and he's managed to convince his better players to stay.
In fact, the visitors have been relatively quiet in the transfer market, with only squad players leaving. New arrivals include Dominik Hofbauer (Neustadt), Christian Schilling (Wacker), Martin Herrer (Austria) and Juan Barrera.

Betting prediction When these two played each other at the Cashpoint Arena last season, the games ended 3-3 and 0-1 (Altach).
The first of them was a bad tempered affair with three red cards, Altach trailed 3-0 before making a late rally to secure a draw. The other match was a more orthodox 0-1, and the odds were very similar to todays.
Since the visitors have a lot more stability, we believe they should be considerably shorter in the market.
